The Hospitality of Abraham

14th century
Fresco
Pomposa Abbey, Italy

The panel in the first picture represents Genesis 18:2, "there appeared to him [Abraham] three men standing near him: and as soon as he saw them he ran to meet them from the door of his tent, and adored down to the ground." In the other picture, Abraham and Sarah bring the visitors bread and a roasted calf.

In both panels what the text calls "men" the artist portrays as angels with wings. This is not uncommon in Hospitality of Abraham images.

The basin on the table is for the water that Abraham brought so the visitors could wash their feet.
